Anna Barkauskienė in exile in the Altai (Original version in Russian)

When Anna Barkauskienė’s mother and father, deported with her in June 1941 from Kaunas, Lithuania, arrived in the Altai, they thought that that was the end of their road into exile. They prepared for a long stay and planted a vegetable garden on a patch of land, in the hope of surviving the harsh conditions there. But they only spent a year there and in summer 1942 were deported again towards the mouth of the River Lena.
