На твій лист відзиваюся до Теби моя найдороша братово Ми дякувати Богу потрохи здорові ни такі як треба жиєм а поводится дуже добри якого добра і здоровля Вам жилим зі серця і з любовю до вас к утру ми відчуваєм на душі і на тілі нашої взаїмної родіни, дороги брато(ва)...Як там Модю Господи (як ти) зроби(...) волоцюгою нам (чи) триматися дому не учиться а навіть до Мени нихочи відатися бо на мовляють его щоб зімною нистричався (ти) твоя сестра гануська що себе так все (...)

...а  типер і дуже добри вилика господині а він господар та ше до того дужи чесний що наробив тобі такого добра і труду що кажи вона б мені того низробила то правдою що нє а він не знає що ему більше зробилося що забрав твою працю і на крив собі хату і нічого навіть ниспільне що може треба якось помагати бо ми невзгоді так як пес зі собакою завши друтся як тілько ти виїхала а ту я ще троха не здужаю і жінка Модиста вже кілька разів гонили 

…від себе іди кажи до єї фамілії Али що робити Мусим терпіти може і для нас ще Бог має і на городить своєю ласкою ми просим єго помочі в день і в ночі за Ваше здоровля Опіку Надію ми вашім щоденнім життю, дорога братова тільки все поступай чесно привітно слухай своїх зверхників шануй себи і дитину і других з которими працюєм і жиєм то певно же будуть тебе любили ни гридися ни сумуй будь завсігди весела з вірою в майбутнє

…дорога братово напиши як як треба тобі грошей то ми тобі вислим а може бі знайшла ласку що тобі лекши було і дитині то як ось давай собі раду позатим в нас всю добри та як завши тілько просим Вас напишіть до нас. Дорога наша братова і Еленцю здоровимо Вас цілуваням ваших уст і жилим Вам всю що собі бажаєм зоставайте здорові раз на все.

Letter from Ukraine, from Uncle Dmitri to Maria and her daughter Elena in Siberia

5/3 1945

Dear Sister-in-law, I reply to your letter: thank God, we are in good health, we are living not just properly but actually very well and this good health and good life we wish them for you with all our hearts and love. In the mornings, we feel as if the body and soul of our shared motherland, my dear sisters-in-law… How is Modest here? Heavens, what can we do. The lazybones stays at home, doesn’t do his schoolwork and won’t even come to see me, because you and his sister Hanushka (who has always been…) you encourage him not to visit me…

…and now she is the great mistress of the house and he’s the master, and so honest that he has gained such property and such a job, as if she said that it was all obtained through pure honesty. And he doesn’t know that ill-gotten gains never prosper, he worked and “improved his conditions” as if we had nothing in common. Perhaps we ought to help each other, because we have our misfortunes, but instead we’re like cat and dog fighting all the time. When you left, I fell ill a little, and Modest’s wife tried more than once to kick us out…

…of her house, go back, she said, to your family. But what can be done, we must put up with it, and God has perhaps still some affection for us and will reward us. Day and night we ask for his help, pray for your health and each day of your life, thank him for your protection, your hope. Dear Sister-in-law, be honest, listen carefully to the people around you, have respect for yourself, your child and the others we work and live with, and you will be loved; do not be sad but joyful, believe in the future

…dear Sister-in-law, write if you need money and we’ll send you some and perhaps you will find affection and things will be easier for you and your child; and with that I’ll end; here everything is well and as before, we ask only that you write to us. Dear Sister-in-law and Elena, we say goodbye, kiss you and wish you all we wish ourselves, good health.
