Operation Surf — Deportation train n° 97353

Train n° 97353 was one of many used in Lithuania during Operation Surf (Прибой) in 1949 to take nearly 95,000 people into exile. This train alone comprised 55 carriages with 1,180 people from more than 150 settlements in three districts in Lithuania who were then placed on their arrival in 30 localities. Three maps show the journey. One shows the train’s long route from Lithuania to the Irkutsk region in Siberia. The second focuses on the three districts in Lithuania from which the deportees were assembled within roughly 30 kilometres of the departure station. The third map shows the area where these men and women were resettled, remote places in the Siberian taiga accessible only by boat. Juozas Miliauskas was on this train.

Below is the passenger list for the train (Поэшелоный список) established by the Ministry of Internal Security of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic, on which his name is recorded as the 4th passenger in carriage (Вагон) 386894.
